Delayed ejaculation in men is described as difficulty or inability in reaching orgasm and ejaculating semen. It is defined as taking longer than 30 minutes to ‘come’. It is normal from time to time to experience Delayed Ejaculation and is only considered a problem if it is causing you or your partner distress.

It can be classified as Primary (lifelong) Delayed Ejaculation or Secondary (temporary/acquired) Delayed Ejaculation. It can be called Generalised if it occurs every time you have sex/masturbate or Situational if it only happens in certain situations e.g. with a partner.

There can be several reasons why you have delayed ejaculation. These can be divided into emotional, medication induced or physical causes:

Emotional

  • Depression or anxiety
  • Relationship problems
  • Performance anxiety
  • Low self esteem
  • Cultural or religious taboos
  • Difference between fantasies and real sex

Drugs

  • Antidepressants
  • High blood pressure medications
  • Diuretics
  • Antipsychotics
  • Anti-seizure medication
  • Alcohol or recreational drugs

Physical

  • Injury or surgery to pelvic nerves
  • Urinary Tract Infection
  • Prostate surgery
  • Underactive thyroid
  • Low testosterone level
  • Retrograde ejaculation (semen is ejaculated into bladder)
  • Birth defect

The consequences of having delayed ejaculation can be:

  • Reduced sexual pleasure for you or your partner
  • Stress and anxiety around sex
  • Loss of interest in sex or avoidance
  • Relationship problems
  • Infertility
