Loss of libido is a medical term that describes low sexual desire or reduced sex drive.

Low libido is a very common sexual problem that both men and women can experience at any age. It is a distressing experience for a couple, as sex is often an important part of a relationship.

There are many factors that can result in a reduced interest in sex and is often found to be a combination of them. Causes can be divided into 3 main categories- physical, social and psychological. Due to the nature of the mind-body connection, physical causes of low desire can result in both psychological factors and social factors too.

Physical causes:

  • Testosterone deficiency in men
  • Menopause in women
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Cancer treatment
  • Painful sex
  • Depression
  • Thyroid Disease

Social causes:

  • Stress
  • Parenthood
  • Difficult childbirth
  • Loss of intimacy

Psychological causes:

  • Sexual trauma
  • Relationship problems
  • Mismatched libidos

Listed above are some of the causes of reduced sex drive. Treatment is dependent on its cause. Once the cause is identified, I can work with you to help regain your sex drive. Blood tests are sometimes useful to exclude a medical cause.
